Patrick Roberts’ reported release from Girona is a great chance for Celtic

Celtic fan-favourite Patrick Roberts has been binned by Girona – leaving a big opportunity there for the Hoops.

Roberts was idolised at Parkhead. He made 85 appearances at Celtic and managed 15 goals in the process. But it was his quick feet and incredible ability on the ball that made him a joy to watch.

And, according to the Sun, the loan deal has been canceled between Girona and Manchester City. This comes after the Englishman failed to play a full 90 minutes for Girona all season.

Roberts has hardly been used in Spain this term. He’s made 19 appearances for the relegation-threatened side, but only six have been starts. He also hasn’t scored for them, but did manage one solitary assist against Alaves in the Copa del Rey.

As quoted by the Sun, Girona manager Eusebio Sacristan said the following on Roberts.

“Patrick Roberts isn’t in the squad. There are other players in the team I believe that are better and there’s no point entering into further details.”

Time to jump right in

This is the perfect opportunity for Celtic to slither in and nab Roberts. He has just one year left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium come the end of the season (The Sun).

So, given that we know what Roberts is capable of, it would be the right time to try and test City with a bid. It would be more worth their while losing him for money this summer than for nothing next year.

As well as that, Celtic are needing an upgrade down the left on Scott Sinclair. The Englishman is also out of contract at the end of the coming season, so Roberts being his replacement would be a massive increase in quality for the Hoops.

The fact Roberts is perhaps a little bit of damaged goods could work in our favour too. His spell in Spain hasn’t done him any favours, but we all know what he’s truly capable of.

Therefore, what harm could it do for Celtic to ask the question of City this summer? Everything has fallen into place nicely should the Hoops attempt a summer move.
