Paul Lambert names Celtic star more important than Nicolas Kuhn who makes the game look ‘easy’

Nicolas Kuhn has been Celtic’s standout player this season.

Brendan Rodgers can’t have too many complaints about how Celtic have played because the football has been enthralling.

Yes, last season, you could argue that the style of play was sluggish and the team was dragging themselves over the line more than anything else.

But Celtic still won the double and now they are showing the world that they have gone to the next level.

That’s proven by Celtic’s performances in the Champions League and the fact that they have dropped points in only one league game this term.

Yes, Aberdeen have managed to keep up with the champions’ pace, but they still got smashed for six in the League Cup semi-final to detail the gulf in class between the two.

Kuhn is rightfully getting plaudits for his performances, but Paul Lambert feels there is someone more important than the German.

Paul Lambert says Callum McGregor is the one who makes Celtic tick

For years and years, Callum McGregor has been one of the best players in Scotland and his performances aren’t dipping.

Donning the captain’s armband, he is leading from the front and proving that he is playing some of the best football of his career.

Lambert told The Football News Show that McGregor makes the game look ‘easy’ and he is the one who gets Celtic going, even if Kuhn has been getting the headlines in recent times.

“Collectively they are getting better as a team,” said Lambert. “Brendan has got them in a really good place.

“I think Kuhn has found his feet. It took him maybe a season to find his feet. He’s having a good season. I think the one that makes them really tick is Callum McGregor. I think that’s the one that makes the game look easy. He’s a terrific little footballer. Moves it really quickly. Plays one and two-touch. Plays off the back foot. I think he leads it for them. He is the one who wants the team to play that type of football.

“But Kuhn, Kyogo and Maeda. I think that from three are very, very good. I have got to say that. The front three are very, very good.”

McGregor’s stats for Celtic this season

McGregor retiring from Scotland duty has certainly helped Celtic’s cause because now they have their skipper refreshed and ready to go.

The 31-year-old probably exited the international scene at the right time because those little niggling injuries were starting to pick up.

Celtic and the player himself will now see the long-term effects of that in years to come because he has made an outstanding start to the season.

WhoScored have rated his Premiership performances at nearly eight and he is just below seven in the Champions League.
