The Eddie Howe to Celtic rumours just won’t go away, and neither will fan debate on whether he’s good enough.
Howe has been out of work for the entirety of the 2020-21 season. This came after the Englishman suffered relegation with Bournemouth last term.
But that shouldn’t be and won’t be what Howe is remembered for down south. Nope, his meteoric rise from League Two up to the Premiership with the Cherries will be the legacy he’s left. Indeed, he even managed a top-10 finish with Bournemouth during his time there too.
It’s no wonder he’s been tipped over the years to be a future England manager (The Telegraph). However, Gareth Southgate is going nowhere anytime soon with the Euros on the horizon, so Howe finds himself now at a crossroads.
Mark Burchill told the Celtic Huddle podcast last week that Howe would be intrigued by the prospect of working at Parkhead (you can read our story on that here).
Eddie Howe to Celtic is a theory fans can get behind
Howe himself has spoken about his next move in recent times also. Back in November, he stated that his next job has to “really motivate” him. He stressed the importance of spending more time with his family too (Sky Sports).
That could make a move to Parkhead tricky. But it’s looking more and more certain that there’s going to be an opening in the summer if not sooner. Neil Lennon simply can’t survive this season. It’s not an over-exaggeration to say absolutely nothing has gone right.
Celtic feel as though they’re in a place similar to 2016 under Ronny Deila. Even though we won the league under Ronny, there was a stale feeling. A sense that the club was moving backwards and at an accelerated pace.
We’re in that very same position once again under Neil. Having a young yet experienced tactician like Howe and with the contacts he’ll arrive with could be another Brendan Rodgers moment. He would certainly get a similar welcome and it would feel like a major step forward.
And as the situation at Celtic continues to get worse and worse, supporters have again called for Howe to be given the reins:
Eddie Howe is probably the best we can hope for. Young manager with professional standards and plenty of potential. If we want to progress then it’s regime change. Lawwell and Lennon have had their time with Celtic, blew our most vital season with complacency and arrogance.

I think be a good move for both parties, Eddie Howe would be joining a huge club, pressure, expectation, European football, do what Rodgers & enhance your reputation…Celtic would be getting a young, forward thinking Manager who would bring a new approach to how we play 🍀🍀

Wat did Rodgers win before he came to Celtic a league cup can't understand not wanting Eddie Howe a young modern manager is exactly what we need he's highly regarded if celtic want him they need to move for him now before someone does

Howe is a forward thinking manager who did a really impressive job at Bournemouth. It was little surprise he was being tipped for big EPL jobs such as Arsenal. If Celtic could get him it would be a great move for the club.

@CelticFC as much as i love this club and always have this has been 1 of the worse seasons if had to support them through we need to get rid of alot of players in the summer and need to sack the board and we need to get Eddie howe in as the new celtic manager ☘️

Celtic should be trying to recruit the best manager they can get. I don't know if that's Howe or not but he certainly fits the criteria of a forward-thinking coach. https://t.co/4KiyHRlNtg

Changes should’ve happened already at Celtic, but they MUST HAPPEN NOW. New manager in, I’d say Howe. Let them build for next season.

The annoying thing is Eddie Howe should already be the Celtic manager if the board had any sense. He'll probably be Newcastles manager before the end of January now.
