Peter Grant says there is only one player in the Celtic squad that can replace Callum McGregor

There will be a time when Callum McGregor is no longer playing for Celtic.

McGregor is a Celtic legend and has been the perfect replacement for Scott Brown as the captain of the club.

He has won pretty much everything there is to win with the Hoops and now looks to be slowly heading towards the end of his career.

Now 32, Brendan Rodgers will be wondering in the back of his mind who can replace him.

It is a specialist role that will require a certain type of player, and Peter Grant thinks that there is only one player at the club that can fill the role.

Peter Grant thinks Paulo Bernardo can replace Callum McGregor

Paulo Bernardo has had an incredibly difficult start to the season and is struggling to get into the side.

Rodgers said Bernardo is a fifth-choice option at the moment, but supporters feel he should be given a chance.

Grant is also in agreement with supporters and believes he is the only player equipped enough to replace the current Celtic captain.

He told the Daily Record: “I’m surprised he’s not played more minutes. He reads situations well, he seems to know where the ball is going and picks up a lot of second balls.

“The biggest compliment I could pay him is that if Callum’s not playing, he’s the only one who could play Callum’s role. That’s my opinion.”

Brendan Rodgers cannot let Paulo Bernardo’s talents go to waste

Bernardo had to play catch-up after representing Portugal at the European U21 Championships in the summer, but has been back for long enough to actually try and force his way into the side.

For the first time this season, McGregor is not featuring in every game and that means there is a perfect opportunity for the midfielder to be given a chance to see if he can fill the void long-term.

The £3.5m talent is incredibly gifted, and would be wanted by many clubs across Europe if he felt that his time at Celtic was up. Rodgers cannot afford to let that happen.
