Peter Grant has urged Celtic to hand Liam Scales a new contract after his strong performances this season.

Before a ball could be kicked this season, Peter Grant thought that Liam Scales would be joining Aberdeen because of the faces ahead of him in the centre-back pecking order.

But with injuries opening a few doors for the 25-year-old, he has now become an established member of Celtic and Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Peter Grant thinks the 25-year-old has been ‘exceptional’ despite there being ‘question marks’ over his head, as he told Go Radio

Even though Brendan Rodgers can pick from the experience and quality of on-loan Liverpool star, Nat Phillips.

He is still pushing for Liam Scales and Cameron Carter-Vickers as his main centre-back pairing, which says it all.

Either way, with Liam Scales’ new contract set to expire in 2025, Peter Grant wants him tied down to a new deal because he feels he is deserving of it.

Liam Scales new Celtic contract?

“I think young Scales has been excellent,” said Grant. “Carter-Vickers coming back in has helped him as well.

“To be fair to the young man, at the start of the season, he was being questioned. I have said many times. I watched him in pre-season and I thought he did very well. But it still looked like he was going to go out to Aberdeen.

“Then, all of a sudden, through circumstances, and that’s what you need as a young player, that opportunity. I thought he has done exceptionally well. In the big European games, I thought he has played really, really well against top-quality opposition.

On a new contract for Scales: “His performances deserve a new contract. The circumstances might now be a little different because he is a starter and he gets more cash, or other clubs are interested in him. Left-sided central defenders are not easy to get. A lot of people like that balance because of the way they play now.”

Liam Scales deserving of praise

Perhaps the surprise package in the Celtic side this season and one of the top performers.

Not many saw this coming, but huge credit to the player for grabbing that chance – James McFadden has also been impressed by Scales.

It’s not just the player himself who deserves the plaudits, but Rodgers also because he is coaching him to be a ball-playing centre-half and a regular member of the XI.
