Peter Lawwell says Celtic don’t have to rebuild much this summer

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell has disappointingly stated that the Hoops don’t have to rebuild much in the summer.

Celtic have just secured a historic treble treble. The success will forever be etched in the club’s history as one of our greatest ever achievements. Despite that, however, Celtic have stumbled this season with their performance levels.

Not many will care now, but many of Celtic’s performances this season have been fairly laboured. The fact the Hoops are so far in front of anyone else domestically has meant that this hasn’t had a severe impact. But with the likes of Rangers, Hibernian, and Kilmarnock all getting stronger, Celtic need to do some big summer work.

It should point in the direction of some serious rebuilding. But speaking in the Scotsman, Lawwell confirmed that he doesn’t believe much work is needing done on the squad.

“We still have a core of a lot of good players. I think people are maybe overestimating what we need to do or overstating it.

“But we understand that we need to be better, we need to be stronger and that will be our intention in the summer. We won’t stand still.

“Listen, we’re not dependent on another club, we’re independent. We want to make Celtic as best as it possibly can be. That’s our desire, it’s our need and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Have you been watching the football Peter?

Again, Celtic’s achievements this season won’t be repeated by any other club in Scotland. But everyone will acknowledge there are a host of key positions that need strengthening. Real repair work needs done to get the football looking fresh again.

Up top, Celtic only have two first-team strikers in Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard. A third will need to be signed, and preferably not just a squad filler either, but a forward who can rival our two still at the club.

In the midfield, Celtic could do with shifting some of the deadwood and adding more strength in depth. It doesn’t look as though Youssouf Mulumbu, Eboue Kouassi, or Nir Bitton have much hope of consistent first-team game-time. Losing all three this summer wouldn’t be a disaster.

The left-wing situation, meanwhile, also needs sorted. Scott Sinclair hasn’t been good enough for some time now, whilst Mikey Johnston can’t be expected to carry the burden on his own.

At the back, Celtic need one or perhaps even two right-backs. The same number goes for a couple of centre-backs too with both Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic scheduled to leave.

Major work needs done Peter. Make it happen, and don’t pretend the football has been better than it is.
