Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell is set to take his place on the SPFL board from Monday, BBC Scotland reports this afternoon.

Traditionally the main men at Celtic and Rangers alternate on the board each year and with Stewart Robertson stepping down, Lawwell’s position will be ratified at a Monday meeting.

Celtic will now have a bit more influence on proceedings in Scottish football, with Lawwell able to formally help make decisions with the rest of his SPFL board colleagues.

St Johnstone chairman Steve Brown and Hamilton’s Les Gray will be the other representatives from the Scottish Premiership.

Clyde’s Gordon Thomson and Brechin’s Ken Ferguson will be representing Leagues One and Two while a vote will take place to determine who represents the Championship.

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster, chairman Murdoch MacLennan and non-executive director Karyn McCluskey round out the board membership.

It’s been a contentious 12 months within the SPFL as club votes, season curtailments and relegations have all caused drama behind the scenes up and down the divisions.

With a Hearts and Partick Thistle action set to be heard by an independent SFA panel next week, no doubt there’ll be more headlines made regarding the governance of the game.

Chief on the agenda for the new board will likely be ensuring the return of fans to football grounds, which Celtic spoke about in a Friday statement.
