Some Celtic fans may have been concerned when they saw images surfacing of Phil Jagielka in Glasgow.
A picture of the centre-back was posted on social media yesterday. The former Everton man is in need of a new club, with both Celtic and Rangers having been linked with a move for him this summer. (Scottish Sun)

Many supporters, however, would likely want Celtic to go down the route of a younger project that they can keep for the foreseeable future.
And fortunately, it doesn’t look like they’re looking at the veteran in any case. Thanks to a report from Football Scotland, we now know that Jagielka was actually just visiting Glasgow to spend some time with friends. No signing talks are on the horizon, and interest from Celtic doesn’t seem very likely.
If anything, however, it initially looked as though he would be signing for Rangers. He was pictured with former Rangers man Gordon Smith. But even that looks doubtful too.
Fans will be relieved
Jagielka has had a terrific career down in England. He’s managed 360 appearances in the English Premier League throughout his career. That’s a tremendous return, and also has an impressive 40 England caps to his name.
But Celtic can’t be going down the route of bringing in older players who are past their prime. It would be more valuable to the club to see what’s in Europe regarding a new centre-back.
The likes of Filip Benkovic, Jozo Simunovic, and Kristoffer Ajer proves that there is quality in Continental Europe waiting to be tapped. Celtic would be rewarded much more in the long-term going down that route.
The idea of Jagielka coming to Parkhead was probably swaying towards the very unlikely anyway. Not many supporters would’ve believed he was in Glasgow to sign for the club. Confirmation of it, however, will hopefully put other supporters at ease.
In the meantime, Celtic are still to recruit at centre-back in any case. With the departure of Benkovic and Dedryck Boyata, we need to make some acquisitions soon. We’re also in a race against time to get players in before the Champions League tie against Sarajevo, but Neil Lennon may be confident enough going with Jozo Simunovic and Ajer for now.
At the very least, we can be thankful one of the targets isn’t a freebie in Jagielka.
