Celtic legend and Lisbon Lion John Clark is set to be honoured with a statue in Chapelhall.

The man who partnered Billy McNeill at the back in ’67, Clark’s association with Celtic lasted over five decades, including spells as coach, assistant manager and kitman.

He sadly passed away last summer at the age of 84, but is now set to be immortalised in his home village in North Lanarkshire.

Renowned London-based sculptor Douglas Jennings has been commissioned for the statue, which will derive from an image of Clark lifting the cup in Lisbon.

Committee aiming to erect John Clark statue in Lanarkshire by next year

According to Lanarkshire Live, Airdrie South councillor Michael Coyle is at the front of a community committee for the local Council to have the statue built.

He told the outlet: It’s an honour to head up this committee as John is a true Chapelhall and footballing legend.

“Joe Meechan has been running events in the White House Bar in Holytown to raise funds for the statue.

“The council has made a financial contribution too and we have support coming from businessmen James Mortimer and Mark Guidi.

“The statue will be bronze and also have a marble plinth on it.

“The aim is to have the statue in place some time next year and we are hoping to place it alongside the ‘Welcome to Chapelhall’ sign; it will be a real highlight in the village.

“The community are over the moon and can’t wait for the statue to be erected.

“John was a very popular guy in Chapelhall, and ran several local businesses, so is very deserving of this permanent tribute.”

It continues a trend of Lions being honoured, with the campaign underway for Jim Craig to be given a statue in Govan, next to his old primary school.

Earlier this year, a stunning statue of Tommy Gemmell was unveiled in Craigneuk, just a five-minute drive from where Clark is set to be honoured.
