Player Ratings: Celtic 1-3 Copenhagen

By David Walton

February 27, 2020

Celtic crashed out of the Europa League after a dreadful display at home to Copenhagen tonight.

Michael Santos, Pep Biel, and Dame N’Doye scored the goals for Copenhagen on a shocking night. Odsonne Edouard’s classy chip initially put us back into the last-32 tie, but the damage was done moments later by Biel and co.

Here, we take a look at the player ratings on a dark night for the Hoops:

Fraser Forster – 6

No chance with any goal. Left far too exposed by ropey defensive mistakes.

Jozo Simunovic – 3

Cost us with a dreadful back-pass. The less said about it the better. Also had one big lapse in concentration that led to a Copenhagen corner as well as a couple of costly moments in the opposition box. Cost us massively tonight and simply isn’t good enough at this level.

Christopher Jullien – 6

Done well against Dame N’Doye in the first half but struggled in the second. Couldn’t keep the backline together.

Kristoffer Ajer – 6

Not individually at fault for the first or second goals, but was too weak for the third. Should’ve been stronger but the tie was dead by then. Positive first-half contribution.

James Forrest – 5

Should’ve scored in the first half when he failed to connect with Mohamed Elyounoussi’s deep cross. Always a threat down the right but struggled for a final ball. Good awareness to latch onto a key error from goalkeeper Kalle Johnsson. Expected more from him tonight.

Callum McGregor – 6

Full of endeavour tonight. Unlucky not to give us the lead with a fine finish early in the second half. Linked up well with the likes of Greg Taylor and Mohamed Elyounoussi at times, but didn’t manage to cut open the visitors.

Scott Brown – 5

Didn’t look fit tonight. Too many misplaced passes as he struggled to control the midfield. Rushed back into action and it told.

Tom Rogic – 5

Looked lively on his first European start of the season. Clever touches in the first half as he found space and combined well with the left-sided players. Didn’t make enough of an impact in the second and ultimately gave away the goal that won it for Copenhagen.

Mohamed Elyounoussi – 6

Another who had a positive first half but waned in the second. Set up Forrest with a terrific cross before missing a big chance of his own when he skied from close range. Got early joy down the left, but couldn’t keep it up.

Greg Taylor – 6

Had his moments as he showed great enthusiasm and energy in the first half. Put some good deliveries into the area too. His second-half performance wasn’t as influential, but he never stopped running all night. Not our worst problem tonight.

Odsonne Edouard – 6

Showed his class when it mattered with a terrific penalty. Meant nothing in the end.

The Subs

Leigh Griffiths (5): On for the final 20 minutes but couldn’t make a difference. Had one big effort that was saved by Johnsson. Nir Bitton (3): On at the death. Vakoun Bayo (3): Same as Bitton
