Postecoglou on his ideal Celtic scenario and how he plans to achieve it

Ange Postecoglou has outlined his ideal for the Celtic squad, and what he’s planning for January to achieve it.

Reflecting on the personnel available to him, Postecoglou pointed out the competition in the full-back slots. At both left and right back, there are at least two first-team quality options. For example, Ralston and Juranovic on the right, Taylor or Montgomery on the left.

That’s what he wants for every position, the manager says. To do it, he’s casting his transfer net early for the January transfer window. Knowing the usual dance of transfers, with Covid-19 still an issue, the importance of working smart isn’t to be undersold here.

Of course, injuries have also built up in recent weeks. Jota, Ralston and Welsh all came off against Hearts, and none are at all likely to feature later today.

The manager said [Herald]:

“That’s why we need a strong squad. The full-back positions were a real problem for us and we now have two players who are excelling every week. That’s what we need in every position. It’s about selecting a team to win every individual game we play. People’s positions may vary depending on what we need.

“The world is an ever-changing landscape. There are always things happening whether its through the issues of Covid or whatever else is happening. Our intent and organisation is around getting players in as early as we can.

“We know what we need and that’s what we are working towards. All things being well that is what will transpire. I’m sure plenty names have been mentioned! We go fishing, we put out a number of lines and we see what we catch.”

Ange Postecoglou determined to “go fishing” to create optimal Celtic squad

I’m sure there are plenty who’d like to go fishing with Ange Postecoglou, but his metaphor is a promising one.

Celtic have indeed been linked with various names. From Fernando Henrique and Hannes Wolf to Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate. There’s cause for real excitement about what Celtic can do in January, provided Ange Postecoglou gets the requisite backing.

Ideally, we would have capable back-up in each position. That can take a great deal of time and effort though, and it’s something that not even classic teams of the past have achieved. Keeping everyone happy in that scenario takes real managerial skill.

Regardless, it’s exciting. And it shows a real ambition not just to achieve things with Celtic in the short-term, but the long-term, too.

Of course, there will be draw-backs and potential disappointments. That’s the very nature of a transfer window. However, Celtic are doing their business early with Ange Postecoglou at the helm.

That can’t be a bad thing, can it?
