Potential Celtic move for Emilio Izaguirre wouldn’t reflect well

The idea of any potential Emilio Izaguirre return just doesn’t bear thinking about.

Make no mistake, the Celtic support absolutely love and appreciate what Izzy brought to us. In total, he made over 270 appearances for us over the course of two different spells at the club. He managed to win a total of seven Scottish Premiership titles, four Scottish Cups, and three League Cups.

His position at Celtic is forever solidified in our history, and he’ll always be welcomed back at the club. Just not as a player.

This isn’t a piece looking to bash Izzy. He’s done so much for us and deserves more respect than that. But at the very least, we could all see last season that the Honduran’s time here as a player was up. It was time to move on, and that must’ve been felt by Celtic too. If the club felt differently, he would’ve likely stayed.

Now, it’s time to look to the future. If Kieran Tierney departs, we already have Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo and Andrew Gutman as natural left-backs. Jonny Hayes can fill in there if necessary, but another signing is likely to be on the radar.

And if that’s the case, it needs to be someone fresh, vibrant, and faster than Izzy.

Potential Emilio Izaguirre return makes absolutely no sense

Signing up our former man for a third spell wouldn’t just be detrimental on the park. What it also represents is a massive lack of ambition too. It would smack of laziness, and far too many of the connotations with this signing would be negative.

The Scottish Sun has, thankfully, stated that the Hoops haven’t offered Izzy another chance. That came after Montagua’s president stated that there was indeed an offer on the table for him. It’s difficult to know what to believe, but it would hardly surprise you if Celtic were considering it.

And it just simply sends out all the wrong messages about where the club is going. Sure, Izzy would be brought in as cover and nothing more. But even so, it’s cover that we know wouldn’t work.

Izzy had his chances last season and simply didn’t impress. It’s the same as going back to Mikael Lustig and wanting him to return as back-up to Hatem Abd Elhamed. Not many would be on board with it, and it would smack of poor scouting.

Taking everything into account, this does look a bit of a stretch. Hopefully it is, as it’s time we moved on as a club and allowed Izzy to be remembered as the top player he was during his first spell.
