The potential Celtic move for Husein Balic may have been thrown into question by some developments in Austria.

The Hoops were linked with the young winger at the start of the month. The Daily Mail reported that Neil Lennon was interested in the man who had impressed during the Under-21 Euros and could get him for as little as £700,000 this summer.

However, Balic’s current club St. Polten have recently had a transfer embargo imposed on them by the Austrian football authorities.

The Bundesliga side had expected the initial embargo to be lifted but it was infact upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Austrian newspaper Kurier reports that a verdict was reached after eight weeks.

Will Celtic still move for Balic?

The chat on Balic had gone very quiet in recent weeks anyway but it’s clear Celtic were interested at one point. The original report was written by Stephen McGowan who’s understood to have unrivalled contacts at the club. It’s therefore fair to assume that Celtic’s interest was very genuine, at one stage at least.

St. Polten’s setback will mean that they’ll not want to lose any of their players – nevermind a star man like Balic. The Austrians were a mid-table outfit last season but they’ll now be tipped by many to go down this year.

It doesn’t look like a deal for Balic is very likely at all.
