Former Celtic goalkeeper Rab Douglas was impressed with how Hoops loanee Jonathan Afolabi fared on his debut for Dundee, reports the Courier.

Afolabi, who moved to the Dens Park side for the rest of the season in midweek, scored in Dundee’s 4-0 friendly win over Peterhead.

Douglas was particularly taken with Afolabi’s ability to shoot from distance.

“I liked the look of”

“It was a really positive sign to see their new loan signing from Celtic, Jonathan Afolabi, scoring on Tuesday night from outside the box. Afolabi – who I liked the look of when he played against Arbroath for Dunfermline last season – has shown he’s got the technique to be effective from distance” Douglas said, writing in his column for the Courier.

It will be interesting to see how Afolabi fares in his second loan spell away from Celtic Park. As Douglas says, last season he was at Dunfermline, this season he is at Dundee.

Celtic still have hopes for the player though. It was reported by Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports news that Afolabi signed a deal until 2023 before he joined Dundee. That shows that he has a future with the Hoops.

Neil Lennon will no doubt hope to take in some Dundee games when the Hoops aren’t in action, if he is able to that is. The current restrictions may prevent that. However, he will no doubt be getting notes on the striker’s progress as the season goes on.

Hope to get some goals in Betfred Cup

Dundee has a few Betfred Cup games on the horizon against Forfar and Brora Rangers. You would hope that Afolabi gets a start and in amongst the goals in those games.

His first real test could come when Dundee face Hearts in their first league game of the season. That game is live on the BBC Scotland channel. No doubt there will be a few Celtic fans watching on to see how well the striker performs.

Rab Douglas will know a good player when he sees one. After all, he played with more than a few in his time at Celtic. Therefore, it is quite promising that he has been impressed with Afolabi so far. Hopefully he returns to Celtic full of confidence after scoring plenty of goals.

In other news, it is a pity that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will return to an empty Celtic Park after 19 years.
