Rangers dropping points already as Celtic end opening day top of Scottish Premiership

Celtic have started the Scottish Premiership as they ended it in May, top of the table and looking down on the opposition.

The Bhoys’ 4-2 victory over Ross County was enough to ensure Brendan Rodgers’ side sit in first place courtesy of goals scored, with Hearts also winning by a two-goal margin against St Johnstone earlier this afternoon.

David Turnbull, Kyogo Furuhashi and Matt O’Riley were all on the scoresheet at Celtic Park, giving our supporters something to cheer on Flag Day at Celtic.

Most amusingly, title rivals Rangers have already dropped a clanger, beaten 1-0 away to Kilmarnock thanks to a second-half Brad Lyons strike. Michael Beale’s outfit had no answers and will already be feeling pressure from their supporters to kick into gear in the early stages of the season.

After all the hype of the summer, of new signings, of pre-season – they’re already playing catch up on Rodgers’ Bhoys. Obviously, there’s a long way to go this season – 37 more games to be precise. It’s absurd to get carried away, but it’s also really funny to see them stumble on the opening day.

There’s still a chance for either Hibernian or St Mirren to end the weekend at the top of the pile. The two teams play at Easter Road tomorrow afternoon after the Edinburgh side’s exploits in Europe on Thursday evening.

Elsewhere in the division, promoted Dundee picked up a point with a 1-1 draw against Motherwell at Dens Park. Livingston and Aberdeen played out what sounds like a dour 0-0 in West Lothian.

The next round of fixtures is big for Celtic. A trip to Pittodrie will be a tough test, while Rangers will be expected to take care of Livingston at Ibrox despite today’s calamity.

There can be no room for complacency at the Bhoys from either the squad, the staff or the fans. We all know a run of consistency is required here. But for now, let’s have a wee laugh. Football is truly back!
