Rangers interim chairman admits why catching Celtic will be ‘difficult’ this season

The gap between Celtic and Rangers has been a much-discussed point this season.

Celtic’s financial power in conjunction with their spending power in the transfer market and the impressive 3-0 win in the Glasgow Derby opened up the debate recently.

And why it is even being classed as a debate is beyond many people in the media unless you listen to people like Graeme Souness.

Souness bizarrely claimed the gap between both clubs is not that big whilst Dave King has a completely different view to the former Rangers manager.

Rangers’ majority shareholder is in no doubt that Celtic are streets ahead both on and off the park and now it’s the turn of Ibrox interim chairman, John Gilligan, to offer his thoughts.

Gilligan ‘not stupid’ about the gap between Celtic and Rangers

Gilligan is the man in charge at Rangers after John Bennett stepped down this month and taking his first press conference, the interim chairman took in his first press conference.

Gilligan said via Football Scotland, “History tells you that happens. Sometimes we are ahead, sometimes Celtic are ahead. At the moment we are chasing. There is no argument there, I am not stupid enough to say otherwise. But we will keep chasing.

“Player trading is the biggest success and qualification for the Champions League. It is a kind of Catch 22 – player trading gets you income, Champions League gets you income.

“When you fail to get it, it is difficult because Scottish football’s level of support, TV, sponsorship etc, you just can’t compare it to England’s. So it is always a challenge, of course it is. It is all about the squad and bringing in players and winning your matches and moving forward.”

Celtic are miles ahead of Rangers

With the gap at the top of the league already at five points and Celtic looking very dangerous in each passing game, it’s looking difficult to see just how anyone can stop them on the pitch right now.

Off it, as 67 Hail Hail have already discussed, the club’s player trading model coupled with the Champions League riches put Celtic on another level to Rangers.

Even though Celtic have broken their record transfer fee twice this summer, if he really needs to, Brendan Rodgers could splash even more cash in January to strengthen the squad.

With no Champions League cash or valuable sellable assets, it’s not just this season Rangers will struggle to catch Celtic. It could be years before the Ibrox club get near them.
