As the March 2026 international break kicks into gear, Celtic boss Martin O’Neill will be watching the skies as closely as the scores.
While the Scotland contingent of Celtic duo Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston enjoy a relatively quiet week with a short hop to Liverpool for the second friendly against the Ivory Coast, other members of the Hoops squad are embarking on journeys that will worry O’Neill.
Why? Well Celtic’s players are already looking weary after a long season, and with the top-six split looming, O’Neill will want as many of his players back fresh for the frantic title run-in.
So here, we have how far every Celtic player on March international duty will travel, including Viljami Sinisalo’s gruelling 22,000 mile Finland round trip.
Should Callum McGregor come out of Scotland retirement for the 2026 World Cup?
Viljami Sinisalo’s Celtic trek to New Zealand
Topping the charts by an almost unbelievable margin is Finnish goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo. While most players measure their international travel in hundreds of miles, Sinisalo is currently navigating a 23,170-mile round trip to Auckland, New Zealand.
Participating in the FIFA Series 2026, Sinisalo faces two matches at the iconic Eden Park. It is quite literally the furthest a Celtic player can travel from Glasgow without leaving the planet.
For context, his one-way trek of 11,585 miles is more than three times the distance covered by Alistair Johnston and Sebastian Tounekti, who both head to Toronto’s BMO Field.
Every Celtic star’s international travel ranked including Kieran Tierney and Daizen Maeda
Interestingly, Celtic’s usual travel kings, Daizen Maeda and Hyunjun Yang, have been spared the gruelling flights to East Asia this month.
With Japan and South Korea opting for European-based camps to prepare for the 2026 World Cup, Maeda’s longest trip is a mere 345-mile journey to Wembley as well as the short trip to Hampden to face Scotland.
| Player | National Team | Furthest Venue | One-Way Miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viljami Sinisalo | Finland | Eden Park (Auckland, NZ) | 11,585 Miles |
| Sebastian Tounekti | Tunisia | BMO Field (Toronto, CAN) | 3,350 Miles |
| Alistair Johnston | Canada | BMO Field (Toronto, CAN) | 3,350 Miles |
| Liam Scales | Rep. of Ireland | Fortuna Arena (Prague, CZE) | 860 Miles |
| Colby Donovan | Scotland U21 | Estádio Coimbra da Mota (POR) | 1,040 Miles |
| Hyunjun Yang | South Korea | Ernst Happel Stadion (AUT) | 980 Miles |
| Daizen Maeda | Japan | Wembley Stadium (London, UK) | 345 Miles |
| Tierney & Ralston | Scotland | Hill Dickinson Stadium (UK) | 180 Miles |
This reduction in air miles for the Celtic pair could be a massive boost for O’Neill’s domestic run-in.
However, the eyes of the medical staff will remain firmly on the North American and New Zealand arrivals. With a combined squad travel distance exceeding 45,000 miles, the race is now on to get these stars back to Lennoxtown, injury-free and ready to resume the battle for the Scottish Premiership title.
