RB Leipzig win ‘not beyond’ Celtic as pundit points to one key result which proves it

Now that Celtic have two of their hardest Champions League games out of the way, Brendan Rodgers can look forward to facing RB Leipzig at Celtic Park next month.

After earning a creditable point in Celtic’s 0-0 draw with Atalanta, Rodgers has given the Parkhead club a great chance of progressing in Europe’s top competition this season.

A win against the German side will put Celtic well in the driving seat to qualify from the league phase whether it be automatically or through the knockout play-off places.

The German side spent over £50m in the summer to strengthen their squad so beating them won’t be easy for Celtic.

But after watching Liverpool take care of RB Leipzig 1-0 in Germany, Pat Nevin believes Brendan Rodgers’ Bhoys have a chance.

Beating RB Leipzig in Champions League ‘is not beyond’ Celtic

Nevin told Football Daily, “Well, you wouldn’t be surprised to hear I was downstairs in the foyer watching it because they were piping it in here.

“And I was very keen to see how Celtic did because it was so pivotal, this game after that defeat against Dortmund. Remember, they won the first game against Slovan Bratislava 5-1.

“So when you look at it now, a point away from home at Atalanta, that’s a really good result, right? They lost against Dortmund. They were going to lose that anyway.

“And they’ve won their home game. You look at what they’ve got coming up now. their next game is Leipzig.

“And I’ve watched Leipzig tonight. That’s not beyond them. Bruges at home. Again, it’s Celtic Park. That’s not beyond them. Then they’ve got Young Boys who have already seen this season as well against Aston Villa. Not beyond them.

“Celtic are actually not that bad a position just now.”

Celtic’s Champions League record against Bundesliga clubs

Celtic have faced German opposition in the Champions League group stages nine times in their history.

So far, the Hoops have won none but have earned draws against Borussia Monchengladbach (1-1) back in 2016 and against Bayern Munich (0-0) under Martin O’Neill in 2003.

Celtic’s heaviest defeat was, of course, against Borussia Dortmund this month but they have also lost against Bayern three times, Monchengladbach once and RB Leipzig twice.

Beating the Germans at Celtic Park is doable but Celtic will need the type of Herculean performance they produced against Atalanta in Bergamo last night.
