‘Really…’ Chris Sutton is surprised by what he’s hearing about Celtic’s Luke McCowan

Luke McCowan has made an outstanding start to life as a Celtic player.

There was a lot of hype and excitement when McCowan made the switch from Dundee to Celtic in the summer.

And to the surprise of nobody, he has made a brilliant start, including scoring his fourth goal in the famous green and white colours over the weekend.

Celtic beat Motherwell 3-0 on Sunday and Brendan Rodgers handed his new signing a start at Fir Park.

Captain Callum McGregor was absent through injury after he and the team put themselves through it during their draw against Atalanta in the Champions League.

McCowan didn’t disappoint the Celtic fans because he opened the scoring with a brilliantly-worked individual goal and he got plaudits left, right and centre.

But Chris Sutton was told something about McCowan that left him a little surprised.

One of the best things about McCowan’s move to Parkhead was the fact that he was joining his boyhood club.

It makes it that more special when the fans know that one of their own is donning the shirt and representing them on the domestic and European stage.

It so happens to be that Sutton is McCowan’s Celtic hero, but the former striker was left surprised by that and stated that he expected it to be Henrik Larsson, as he told Sky Sports Football (27/10/24 at 3:30 pm).

There isn’t a more popular man in Glasgow than ‘The King’, but that still shouldn’t hide what Sutton brought to the table during his playing days.

“One of his heroes, Chris Sutton,” shared commentator Daniel Mann. “Really,” responded a surprised Sutton. “Did you just make that up?”

Mann then added: “No, I never make anything up. Well researched, well resourced, breaking news.”

Sutton then stated: “I think I would have been down the order a little bit. There was a guy called Larsson.”

Chris Sutton’s Celtic career

With eight trophies during a legendary spell under the great Martin O’Neill, Sutton didn’t just have a glittering career in Scotland, but also in England.

He was part of the famous Blackburn Rovers side, managed by Kenny Dalglish, that won the Premier League title, so he was used to the big time.

But during his days at Celtic, and given the immense competition that was in place, Sutton left lasting memories, including scoring that goal after 20 seconds against Rangers. 

Overall, Sutton’s goalscoring record was outstanding and he nearly found the back of the net after every two matches.
