‘Composed’: Barry Ferguson says Celtic star continues to shine despite Feyenoord loss

At the start of the season, Liam Scales wouldn’t have seen himself as a starter for Celtic.

It could have been argued that Celtic probably would have sent him out on loan again, yet he is standing tall and proving to be one of his side’s best players during the early stages of the new season.

Barry Ferguson has been impressed by what Liam Scales has produced, including during the 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord in the Champions League where he felt that he was ‘really good’ and ‘composed’ on the ball, as he told Go Radio

Whilst Gustaf Lagerbielke continues to have these iffy moments, the man by his side looks like the main guy and performs like he is this new summer signing.

It was interesting that, during the win over Dundee last time out, Brendan Rodgers opted to keep the Aberdeen loanee in the starting XI when bringing Nat Phillips in for his debut.

That was the right call by the Celtic boss because he hasn’t put a foot wrong this season.

Liam Scales continues to impress

“To be fair, watching the game (against Feyenoord), I thought Liam Scales was really good,” said Ferguson. “I thought he was good. Really good.

“He is a guy who you thought was in Siberia. He was maybe going back to Aberdeen. Never looked like he was going to have a Celtic career.

“But, one thing about him, is that he defended really well. On the ball, he was composed. That’s what you need when you are away from home in Europe.

“He was out of the picture (before the start of the season). Sometimes you need that slice of luck with injuries to get that opportunity to show ‘listen, I might not be a certain starter, week in and week out, but I can have a career at Celtic’.”

From the darkness there is light

Those injuries at the back at the start of the season were frustrating for the fanbase and the club as a whole.

That’s why Nat Phillips came in, but sometimes when those dark clouds emerge, there is always some light.

And it has come in the form of Scales, who when Celtic are back to full strength, deserves to be in with a shout of keeping his place, that’s if these performances continue.
