Reported 2021 Celtic target Ben Siegrist is in talks over a new contract with Dundee United, according to the Daily Record.

The report states that the Swiss goalkeeper is attracting interest south of the border. The same goes for fellow United stars Jeando Fuchs and Ian Harkes. It’s also claimed that United will need to be patient with no agreement imminent with Siegrist.

The talented shot-stopper was on Celtic’s radar earlier this year too. Swiss outlet Blick reported back in January that the Hoops had been looking at Siegrist for some time.

Siegrist, who’s into the final year of his Tannadice deal, opened up on the speculation regarding Celtic during the summer. He confirmed that if there was any interest then he would take a closer look [Daily Record].

In the end, Celtic signed Joe Hart to be their new number one. As things stand, the Hoops have 4 goalkeepers signed to their ranks including Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain, and Conor Hazard respectively.

Siegrist, meanwhile, has continued to perform on Tayside, bagging 7 clean sheets in 14 games this season [Transfermarkt].

Why Celtic should still be sniffing around Ben Siegrist

Sure, you could look at Celtic’s goalkeeping options and think we’re well stocked. We are, but we’re hardly packed with quality outside of our current number one.

We know that Barkas isn’t going to make it here. As for Bain, he’s proven time and again he isn’t of the standard required – even as a back-up. Hazard, meanwhile, will likely be eyeing up a move soon in order to gain first-team football.

Celtic should indeed look at trimming the fat of their goalkeeping department. But at the same time we should be looking to replace some of it with some genuine quality.

Siegrist has proven over the last 18 months or so that he has what it takes to be a top shot-stopper in Scottish football. His clean sheet record has been impressive this season, and it’s clear he’s ready for the step-up. Outside of Hart and Allan McGregor, there isn’t a more standout keeper in Scotland than Siegrist.

If there’s an opportunity to be nabbing him for absolutely nothing next summer, we have to jump on it. He would be an upgrade on all of our back-up options.
