Benjamin Siegrist is currently in Glasgow ahead of an expected move to Celtic, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reported last week that the Hoops had won the race to sign the former Dundee United goalkeeper. And it looks as though an official announcement could be creeping ever closer.

The Sun reports that Siegrist has been spotted at the Blythswood Square Hotel in Glasgow. The venue is a popular destination for Celtic when it comes to new signings.

Siegrist is a free agent with Celtic in need of some fresh competition for number 1 Joe Hart. The Swiss stopper would likely play a back-up role to the Englishman, with Scott Bain also among the goalkeeping ranks.

The move would see Siegrist become a direct replacement for Vasilis Barkas, who left Parkhead to join Utrecht on loan earlier this month.

The former Tannadice goalkeeper managed 52 clean sheets in 145 appearances during his time with United [Transfermarkt].

A move to Celtic Park would certainly mark the biggest transfer in the goalkeeper’s career. However, it would also be a major plus for Celtic who would definitely be strengthening the position by signing him.

Siegrist is certainly an upgrade on Barkas in particular. However, you could also say he’s a better option for the Hoops than Bain too.

As much as Hart has impressed over his first year at the club, there’s been a lack of genuine competition there for him. Or perhaps at least a lack of reliable cover should anything happen to our first-choice.

Siegrist provides a safe pair of hands with impressive experience already in the Scottish Premiership. He knows the league inside out and would be able to deputise domestically without any concern.

As for the player, it finally gives him the opportunity to add substantial silverware to his career and finally experience life at one of the biggest club’s in Europe. It’s a win-win for all parties should this be confirmed.

Hopefully, that won’t be too far away.
