Report: Benfica and Liverpool both keen on Celtic youngster; new contract to be signed this week
Celtic youngster Daniel Kelly is set to sign a new contract at Parkhead despite interest from England and Portugal, the Daily Record reports.
The report states that Kelly is set to commit his future to the Hoops before the end of the week. The deal will be his first professional contract.
It’s claimed in the Record that Kelly has been shown he has a pathway to progress through the youth ranks at Lennoxtown. At 16 years of age, the next few years of his development will be crucial, and he looks set to give them to Celtic.
The report also says that Arsenal and Liverpool were circling for the player’s signature. Portuguese giants Benfica, originally linked in 2020, were another ready to pounce.
It’s fine news for Celtic supporters who have become worried with the mass exodus of top talents leaving the club over the last couple of years. The latest looking like being Ben Doak who’s reportedly set for Liverpool [Daily Mail].
But that doesn’t look like being the case with the talented playmaker.
Celtic keeping Daniel Kelly would be a symbol of progress
Celtic have lost so many of their top stars to big European clubs and leagues. Liam Morrison and Barry Hepburn to Bayern Munich. Vincent Angelini to Watford. Josh Adam to Man City, and of course Liam Hughes to Liverpool.
Kelly departing would be another concerning sign, especially if it was hot on the heels of Doak leaving for Anfield. You would start to wonder what the point is in having an academy to begin with.
Thankfully, that doesn’t look like being the case. Kelly looks set to commit himself to the club and hopefully look to progress through the ranks.
Come the end of that deal, you have to imagine his sole focus will be on playing a role in the first team. Ange has always stated that he’ll invest in the talented youngsters that want to be at Parkhead. Kelly appears to have both the talent and the commitment.
And it’ll be a morale-booster for the club as a whole. It would mark the first time in a long time that big-club interest has hovered around one of our stars before deciding to stay. It will certainly be a development that pleases the manager.
Hopefully we get some official word from Celtic before the end of the week on this particular situation.
