Celtic have been alerted to Patrick Roberts’ availability as the club seek options in the wide areas, the Daily Record reports.
Roberts has fallen out of favour at Middlesbrough despite an impressive loan spell there last season. The Englishman returned to the Championship club in the summer, but has only started two games. He wasn’t even part of the matchday squad against Birmingham last week (Transfermarkt).
This has led to constant question marks over Roberts’ future there. Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock stated at the start of the week that the winger can leave if he wants to should a “good club” come in for him (Scottish Sun).
The Record reports that Celtic are in the market for another right-winger. This due to the fact that James Forrest now isn’t due to be back playing until February at the earliest.
However, the source states that the club is tracking several options. Therefore it appears that there’s been no set decision made on where the club goes from here next month.
Celtic have been linked with plenty of wide talents
It’s not as if Celtic haven’t been reported as being interested in anyone else of course. Roberts is only one in a long list of wing-men the Hoops have been said to have looked at.
Over the summer, Celtic were speculated as being interested in Bright Osayi-Samuel of QPR (Scottish Sun). In a move that would perhaps be a touch further out there, we were also identified as a potential destination for Newcastle’s Christian Atsu (Sports World Ghana).
Celtic also had a couple of offers rejected in the summer for Charlton’s Alfie Doughty (Glasgow Times). Granted, Doughty is more suited to playing down the left even if he has experience of either flank.
Roberts’ return, however, would capture the imagination. He was a big part of Brendan Rodgers’ invincibles. He also managed to get the best out of James Forrest too as the Scotland international had one of his best campaigns when Roberts came back for a second spell.
Some will look at Roberts’ form for Middlesbrough and scoff at the idea. After all, if he can’t make it in the Championship then why should we take him? Well, we know Roberts’ true capabilities, and you would back him to get firing again in the Scottish Premiership.
Considering he’s been free of injury for some time now, that scare is also removed from the equation. It would be fantastic to get Roberts on board and would be a nice boost towards the 10. Let’s see how this once plays out next month.
