Report: Celtic expect Aaron Hickey agreement within days
Celtic expect to agree a deal for Aaron Hickey at some stage this week, the Scottish Sun reports.
The report states that talks between the Hoops and Hickey could open this week. This comes after an offer of £3.5million has been launched in the direction of the Serie A club.
The Sun claims that Celtic are confident in agreeing personal terms with the former Hearts youngster. That’s despite the fact Hickey turned down the chance to move to Parkhead back in the summer of 2020.
After starting off well in Serie A and bagging 12 appearances to his name, Hickey would ultimately require shoulder surgery after a nasty knock. He hasn’t played a game for his club since February, making the prospect of a fresh start appealing.
Celtic have Greg Taylor and Boli Bolingoli currently available at left-back. An upgrade is essential at some stage this summer.
Celtic taking a risk on Aaron Hickey, but Hoops fans will be excited
There’s definitely a risk in signing Hickey that needs to be admitted. The fact that he hasn’t played for five months isn’t so much concerning. However, we would all hope that he can return the same player he was before his shoulder injury.
Hickey has already had his fair share of injuries for a 19-year-old. He’ll have hoped for more senior games last year as he looked to seriously kick on. Celtic fans will simply be praying that he isn’t injury-prone should he arrive.
Celtic are also splashing out a considerable outlay for him should we bag a deal. £3.5m suggests that Hickey would be our first-choice left-back next season.
Ange Postecoglou has a track record of including young players in his squads and pushing top youth quality. Hickey, whilst he would technically be a signing, fits the category of the type of player the new Celtic boss likes to build his teams around.
In that sense, signing the Bologna defender will be an exciting prospect for Celtic fans. It solves another key position early in the window. Celtic have already watched on as Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide have come in the entrance door this summer.
It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out as the week continues. The more bodies we get in the door, the better.
In other news, why Hickey rejected Celtic in 2020.
