Celtic are keeping an eye on River Plate striker Rafael Santos Borre, according to Football Insider.

The report claims that the Colombian, who bagged eight goals in 17 appearances this season [Transfermarkt], is valued at £15m by his current club.

However, Borre will be a free agent from July 1st. It’s said by Football Insider that a Celtic source has told them the club is interested in a deal.

The player is said to want a return to Europe on a long-term contract. However, whether Celtic can match any wage demands he has would be questionable. Especially with multiple clubs said to be chasing his signature.

Borre has previously been with Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, and Deportivo Cali. He’s been capped four times by Colombia, and has a total of 74 career goals to his name at 25 years of age.

An exciting seven days for Celtic fans is about to get underway

Celtic move for Santos Borre would be ambitious, but is it doable?

If Celtic moved for Borre, you could all but confirm that Odsonne Edouard will be away. The Colombian striker is far too talented to agree to come to Glasgow and sit on the bench. If anything, he would be our automatic number one for the new season.

Borre appears to be a typical penalty box predator. He doesn’t rely on his speed or his strength any more than he does his movement and runs in behind. Most of his goals with River Plate have come from either one-v-ones or square balls from close-range. He was also listed by 67HailHail as one of three ambitious pre-contract moves to make this summer.

Given how Ange Postecoglou wants to play, we could do with a striker who puts plenty of emphasis on his movement. A player who doesn’t mistime his runs and is always playing on the shoulder.

Granted, Borre wouldn’t come cheap. It’s not yet known who else will be monitoring him around Europe. However, it could be the case that the player is eyeing up a move to one of Europe’s top leagues once again.

In any case, it would be ideal to see Celtic sort out their striker situation ahead of the Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland. The last thing we need is to go into that clash relying on Albian Ajeti and Leigh Griffiths.

Whether it be Borre or not, we need someone of real pedigree in this summer.

In other news, the Celtic fans were certainly enjoying the latest Adidas range announced by the club.
