Celtic are preparing an offer for Rubin Kazan centre-back Carl Starfelt, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Swedish centre-back signed a contract extension with the Russian club back in February, tying him to Kazan until the summer of 2024.

But that doesn’t appear to have put off Celtic. Romano reports that the Hoops are in direct contact with the player to negotiate personal terms. Anel Avdic from Sport Expressen in Sweden claims Celtic are ready to splash as much as £4m on the player:

Starfelt has been a rock for his club since breaking into the first-team back in March 2020. He’s just come off an impressive 31-game campaign in which he helped to secure 11 clean sheets [Transfermarkt].

The 26-year-old also made his debut for the Swedish national team back in October. He’s now bagged three international caps but missed out on a place at this year’s Euro 2020 competition.

An exciting seven days for Celtic fans is about to get underway

Celtic need to get their hands on more than one centre-back; Carl Starfelt an interesting choice

Starfelt’s spell with Rubin is his first outside of Sweden. After coming through the ranks with IF Brommapojkarna, he earned a step-up to IFK Goteborg. It was there he proved his dominance in Swedish football’s biggest league before taking his first steps out of his home country at 24.

Since then, he’s gone from strength to strength and settled into life in Russia. He played an instrumental role in Rubin Kazan’s fourth-place finish last season.

However, a move to Celtic would be a step up again. The Swede has yet to win a single medal in his playing career – something he could easily change at Parkhead.

In addition to that, Starfelt is untested at European level too. His only taste of the continent was four Europa League qualifiers with Brommapojkarna. So Celtic would certainly be a massive step up in both quality and with regards to mentality. He did, however, manage the most minutes out of anyone at his current club last season, with 2592 to his name [WhoScored].

But Celtic are in desperate need of centre-backs as we close in on our UCL qualifier against Midtjylland. A player of Starfelt’s past will be questioned due to his lack of experience.

He appears to be a bit of a late bloomer. But just getting players into the club will ease tension heading into our European campaign.

In other news, Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore has been talking up tomorrow’s “wonderful” Celtic test.
