Celtic are reportedly interested in taking Real Betis’ Antonio Barragan this summer.

According to the Scottish Daily Mail (24th July, Page 82), Barragan is just one of a number of defenders the Hoops are looking at for right-back cover.

There was no report of a bid from the Scottish Premiership champions. There was also nothing in the way of how much he would cost us either. Barragan signed for Betis back in July 2018. He arrived at the club from Middlesbrough, who splashed out £1.5million for his services to sign him from Valencia (Daily Mirror).

Since completing his move to Betis, Barragan has made a total of 55 appearances for the La Liga side. Last season, he played a decent number of 24 games, as he was in and out of the side. Barragan, however, clearly has plenty of experience with just under 200 career appearances in La Liga to his name.

His previous clubs include Spanish rivals Deportivo La Coruna, Real Valladolid, and Valencia respectively. And, in terms of cover, he would certainly tick the boxes.

A deal for Antonio Barragan reads like a second choice

If Celtic seal a deal for Barragan, you have to imagine he would simply be brought in as cover. Celtic aren’t usually in the business of bringing in over-30s to play for them. At 32, Barragan isn’t exactly a youngster anymore.

It’s exactly the kind of signing fans will be pleased with too if it comes off. He reads as extremely reliable cover for Hatem Abd Elhamed, and it would finally sort out the right-back issue we’ve had all summer.

Of course, it doesn’t read well for Anthony Ralston if this move comes off. He’s already the third choice as it is, and if a move for Barragan, or indeed anyone else goes ahead, his Celtic chances look all but doomed.

A bid hasn’t been reported for Barragan as of yet. As mentioned previously, he appears to be just one name on a list of potential right-back targets. This could potentially include FC Basel’s Silvan Widmer, whose agent was at the 5-0 romp against Nomme Kalju last night (Twitter).

But Barragan appears to be a decent alternative should a move for Widmer fail to come about.
