Report: Celtic made enquiry for Nantes' Thomas Basila last year; now available for nothing

Thomas Basila is now available for nothing this summer after Celtic made an enquiry last summer, according to Foot Mercato.

The French source claims that Celtic made enquiries before their push for 10-in-a-row. However, nothing seemed to come of it as he remained in France.

And things appear to have turned sour quickly for the young centre-back. The arrival of Antoine Kombouare as manager in February has seen Basila bombed from the first-team squad. He hasn’t managed a single Nantes squad appearance since February 7th, and has since been plying his trade with the “B” side.

Foot Mercato believes that this could be down to a refusal to extend his contract with the Ligue 1 club. Basila, 21, is said to be attracting interest from all over France. The report states that the likes of Strasbourg, Dijon, and Angers have already started talks with the player’s agent.

The source also claims that there is interest from Ligue 2, and with Basila badly needing game-time after only managing four professional appearances this season, that could pique his interest.

Thomas Basila; a potential option for new Celtic manager?

Basila doesn’t necessarily have the experience he would like for his age. He’s been capped at all France age levels between under-16 to under-20. However, he’s only made 13 appearances for the Nantes first-team [Transfermarkt].

After coming through the ranks with his current club, Foot Mercato report that he’s worried about staying with Nantes due to a potential lack of game-time in the long term. The report claims he now very rarely trains with the first team.

Basila looks like a potential option for the future. This season alone, he’s only played one game for the senior side. That came in a 4-2 loss in the French Cup against Lens. He had, however, managed to make 17 match-day squads before being ousted down to the second-string earlier this year.

So it hasn’t exactly been a breakthrough season for him. It’ll be down to the new manager at Celtic as to what he wants to do with the backline. However, there can be no denying that major surgery is needed.

Kristoffer Ajer will likely depart given he’ll be into the final 12 months of his contract. Shane Duffy will see his tortuous loan spell come to an end and head back to Brighton. That’s not to mention the fact that Christopher Jullien won’t be fit for the start of the season either.

So if Celtic wanted to enter the race for Basila, he certainly plays in the right position. But as a potential starter every week? He doesn’t appear to have the pedigree to be given that promise at Parkhead.

In other news, Celtic Women continued their Champions League push with a superb comeback win this afternoon.
