Celtic could see their move for Liam Scales delayed due to Shamrock Rovers’ Europa League tie against KF Teuta Dorres, according to the Scottish Sun.

Yesterday, the Irish Mirror reported that the Hoops were in talks with the League of Ireland club over a potential move for the 22-year-old centre-back.

Dermot Desmond, Celtic’s principle shareholder, also holds a 25% stake in Rovers too. That likely makes any potential move for Scales to Parkhead all the more likely.

The Irish Mirror has today reported that the move could end up being a League of Ireland transfer record. That record currently stands at €500k [£427k] for Manchester City’s signing of Gavin Bazanu in 2018.

The Irish newspaper says talks went well between Celtic and Rovers yesterday, with the Bhoys now considering an offer.

Celtic signing Liam Scales won’t be enough to satisfy supporters

Getting signings in the door will undoubtedly be important for Celtic this season. However, given Liam Scales’ lack of experience, this won’t be enough to satisfy fans that our defensive issues will be solved by it.

Scales has yet to taste football outside of his homeland of Ireland. An under-21 international, he only has 67 appearances in the League of Ireland Premier League [Transfermarkt].

Scales does have versatility to his name of course. He more often than not deputised as a left wing-back last season. He can also play further forward on the left side too. As well as being a centre-back, he’s a fine utility man to have.

But it’s important to remember that all of these appearances have come at a certain level. A level that’s so far below what’s required at Celtic that you can’t take comfort in Scales’ development in Ireland.

Many fans will also undoubtedly raise an eyebrow at this one given Desmond’s involvement with both clubs. It’s not the best look from the outside.

If this one goes ahead, the player will have all the support going from the Celtic fans. But it’s fair to say more than one eyebrow will be raised.
