Celtic are reportedly unwilling to listen to January offers for Odsonne Edouard.

According to the Daily Record, Edouard was watched by a host of scouts from Europe’s top leagues during France under-21s 5-3 win over Slovakia. Eddy managed to bag a hat-trick in that game, taking his tally to nine goals in four games.

The Record has mentioned Lazio, Roma, Napoli, Borussia Dortmund, and Lyon as clubs who are interested. However, Celtic don’t appear willing to entertain anything for now.

Celtic are apparently prepping themselves for firm offers during the winter window. However, the club is currently in the middle of a huge fight for nine-in-a-row. They will also know that supporters won’t accept the sale of Edouard this January.

Therefore, a move at the end of the season suddenly looks all the more probable.

January offers will come, but Celtic are doing the right thing

It would be easy for Celtic to just accept whatever big-money bid comes in for Eddy this January. After all, they’re going to end up making a sizable profit on the player. That can’t be doubted.

But by not looking to cash in, the club would be standing by the fans here. Edouard has a huge part to play in the second half of our season. Hopefully, that will also involve the latter stages of the Europa League.

Celtic fans know they aren’t going to keep Edouard forever. His record with France under-21s has perhaps come back to haunt us a bit here. But Celtic still have everything in their own hands at the moment.

Edouard is signed up until the summer of 2021. Celtic, at this stage, are under absolutely no pressure to sell him. There’s plenty of time to do that and still make a fine profit on him.

Of course, the proof will be in the pudding. It’s okay saying before the window that we won’t sell him. But should an offer of 30m or so come in for him, would the club really turn it down? You would hope so, but you’re entitled to have your doubts.

In any case, this is the stance fans want the club to have. So long as they remain stubborn in January, we could be pleased with the number of years we’d have managed to get from Edouard.
