Report: Celtic refuse to meet £5m-plus Royal Antwerp valuation for Aurelio Buta
Celtic are refusing to meet the £5m-plus valuation Royal Antwerp have placed on right-back Aurelio Buta, according to Sky Sports.
Celtic have been linked with a move for the Portuguese under-20 international throughout the summer. The Daily Record had claimed previously that the club were struggling to come to an agreement with the player over his wages.
However, throughout the saga, it’s been reported that Antwerp had been wanting £3m for his services [Scottish Sun]. In contrast, Sky Sports believe the true valuation to be over an increase of £2m on that figure. Something Celtic aren’t willing to compete for.
Yesterday, the Scottish Sun stated that Everton boss Rafa Benitez had put the right-back to the top of his summer transfer list. This came after some impressive reports from Goodison Park scouts.
Yet for now, the player remains in Belgium and continues to play on a weekly basis. Celtic, meanwhile, are said to have turned their attentions to Legia Warsaw’s Josip Juranovic [Sky Sports].
Celtic right to baulk at £5m-plus valuation for Aurelio Buta from Royal Antwerp
Celtic are 100% right to shut down nonsensical talk of splashing out over £5m on Buta. The fact is that the player isn’t of the quality to merit splashing out that level of cash.
Buta has only has a handful of European games to his name. He only has one winner’s medal too (2020 Belgian Cup). And, most importantly, he’s out of contract in Belgium next summer. Offering over £5m is madness for a player in those circumstances.
However, what can’t be denied is the haste needed in our search for an alternative. Buta can’t have been the only name on the list. And at the same time, we can’t go fooling ourselves into thinking Anthony Ralston could be the answer.
Even if Anthony proves to be the answer, we would still need competition. One injury to Ralston and Celtic have absolutely no senior options to feature at right-back. That’s an incredible position for us still to be in, and one that will rightly anger supporters.
If we’re going to splash money such as £5m on the player, it has to be the right investment. If Celtic don’t believe Buta is worth that figure, then the club is absolutely correct in moving on from him. Especially if they’re eyeing up a quick move for Euro 2020 star Juranovic at half the price.
Celtic have a huge decision to make on the right-back position. In truth, we’ve been waiting long enough. It’s time for the club to bring much needed cover in immediately.
