Celtic are reportedly set to release Regan Hendry this summer, after failing to break into the first-team squad.

According to the Scottish Sun, the Hoops won’t be offering the reserve-team star a new contract. With his contract up in the summer, Hendry will leave Celtic having failed to make one top-team appearance.

Hendry joined the club back in 2015. Since then, however, all of his work has been out with the senior side.

This season, the youngster has been out on loan at Raith Rovers. He made 13 appearances at Stark’s Park last term, but at 21-years of age, he needs to find regular football every year.

The Sun believes that Raith Rovers are interested in tying him up permanently. Heading into the lower leagues looks like the way to go for the midfielder too.

Celtic just too strong in Hendry’s position

This is hardly a surprise either. Many of the Hoops’ young upcoming midfielders are likely to have the same fate if they aren’t of exceptional quality.

Hendry just hasn’t been able to get a chance due to the competition already at the club in his position. Scott Brown and Callum McGregor won’t be getting dropped anytime soon. Then there are the likes of Olivier Ntcham, Ryan Christie, and Nir Bitton all waiting in the wings too.

It’s a terribly tough position for the youths to come in and make an impact. Regardless of where they go on loan, coming back to usurp any of the players mentioned will be an exceptionally difficult ask.

What it does do for Hendry is finally give him the chance to really settle elsewhere. He has been the captain of the reserves in periods this season along with Kerr McInroy. It’s clear Celtic reserve coach Tommy McIntyre rated him to be giving him that honour.

But it’s a good age for Hendry to up sticks and find something more permanent and where he can truly make an impact. At the end of the day, this move is hardly surprising.
