Celtic sent Tosh McKinlay on an interesting trip yesterday as he was tasked with taking a look at Airdieonians’ Thomas Robert, the Scottish Sun reports.

The newspaper states that the Hoops are one of several Premiership clubs keeping tabs on the young Frenchman, with Rangers and Hibernian also mentioned as potential destinations. Hearts’ name is also in there.

Interestingly, the Sun has also reported that the club’s Head of Football Operations Nick Hammond has also previously been to watch Robert in action. Perhaps a sign of a club that was impressed with what they saw initially.

Robert played 73 minutes against Montrose yesterday in what was ultimately a disappointing 1-0 defeat for the League One club. Robert has five direct goal contributions in 11 appearances this season, comprising of two goals and three assists (Transfermarkt).

The Sun states that he turned down a new contract at Ligue 1 side Montpellier as well as clubs in England in the summer in order to make the move to Scotland’s third tier for a fresh start.

Robert still to burst into life

It’s an interesting story this one, especially if there are several clubs who are looking to take him in the near future. It looks as though Celtic wouldn’t be short of some big competition.

However, Robert has still to really burst into life in Scottish football. His form for Airdrie stats-wise has been decent enough, but they’re not numbers that get you out of your seat – especially not in League One.

Robert, son of ex-Newcastle man Lauren, can play on either wing and even has experience playing as a false nine this season. His flexibility could make him a tempting option for Neil Lennon, particularly given our problems down the wide areas.

Yet even at 20, this would likely be a deal focusing on the longer term. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Robert sent straight back out on loan for example if Celtic were to complete a move for him.

The Hoops will undoubtedly be in the market for fresh wingers in January. But it’s difficult to see Robert being the man who will come in and immediately challenge the likes of Moi Elyounoussi and James Forrest.

Nevertheless, we’ll keep tabs on this one the closer we get to January.
