Celtic are reportedly set to discover the suspension fate of newest left-back recruit Alexandro Bernabei.

The 21-year-old defender officially completed his move to Parkhead last week, signing from Argentinian side Lanus on a five-year deal.

Bernabei arrived just in time for the squad jetting off to Austria and adds to Ange Postecoglou’s options at left-back, providing competition for first-team regular Greg Taylor.

Considering Bernabei was making the move from South America, everything seemed to go through very smoothly, and the full-back will now spend the next five weeks getting to know his teammates in pre-season.

However, there is still one cloud hanging over the talented youngsters’ head.

During his final game for his former side, Bernabei was sent off for heading butting an opponent and received a two-match ban back home in Argentina.

The youth internationalist has served one of the two games of that ban. However, one of these matches may still need to be served.

According to a report from the Scottish Daily Express, Celtic will discover within the next 24 hours whether Bernabei will be available for their opening Scottish Premiership fixture of the season.

The report states that the SFA have received all the registration documentation. But now, they await the international clearance from the AFA, which could include the potential suspension information.

Should the ban go through, the left-back would miss flag day at Celtic Park, with the Hoops taking on Aberdeen in their first competitive fixture of the 2022/23 season.

Whilst Celtic await confirmation of that suspension, Ange Postecoglou’s third summer signing will still be able to feature in pre-season friendlies, and the Bhoys support could get their first glimpse of him tomorrow evening.

It wouldn’t be the ideal start to Bernabei’s career in Glasgow. However, the Celtic manager now has sufficient cover in a number of areas of the field and I am sure the Argentinian would be in line for his first start within the opening weeks of the campaign.
