Celtic are set to bag a six-figure fee from KV Oostende’s sale of Jack Hendry to domestic rivals Club Brugge today, according to the Scottish Sun.

Brugge have secured the services of the former Hoops centre-back. Sky Sports reported that the player has moved for a total of £8.6m.

But what wasn’t known was the fact that Celtic have a sell-on clause involved in the player’s move. The Scottish Sun reports that the Hoops are due a percentage of the deal. And whilst a figure wasn’t placed on it, the report states it will be a six-figure sum.

Hendry signed for Oostende on a permanent basis earlier this summer. The Belgian side splashed out £1.5m to secure the centre-back [Daily Record].

The former Celtic man underwent a renaissance last season in Belgium. It was a campaign that led to him being called up to the Scotland squad for Euro 2020.

And it looks as though Hendry could be involved in some crunch UEFA Champions League games this season with Brugge into the group stage.

Celtic to profit from Oostende sale

It’ll be interesting to find out just how much of a fee Celtic will receive for their former centre-back. Certainly, from the outside, there will be frustration that it wasn’t us receiving the £8.6m transfer sum.

However, Hendry managed to surprise everyone last season with his performances. Operating at a level below Celtic, he managed to show what he’s made of and put in an impressive series of performances.

But now he’s managed a decent step-up. Brugge finished last season as the Champions of Belgium. They’ll come up against PSG, Leipzig, and Manchester City respectively. Those matches in particular will be a true indication of what level Hendry is operating at.

So in that sense, the move is certainly intriguing. It remains to be seen if he’ll make a success of it. But for now, it’s still too premature to state that we made a mistake in letting him go.

12 months ago, Celtic fans would’ve been delighted to get any sort of fee for Hendry. His stock was at an all-time low and he was hardly in demand.

Therefore, we can be satisfied in how all of this has panned out. Good luck to Hendry in his new venture, but Celtic can just be pleased to be getting anything for him.
