Report: Celtic to receive £20m Leicester City summer bid for Kristoffer Ajer
Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer’s summer could be a busy one if today’s report is anything to go by.
The Sun have today stated that Leicester City are preparing a £20million bid for the Norwegian stopper (03/11, page 61).
Brendan Rodgers apparently views him as the ideal replacement for Jonny Evans, could be coming to the end of his time with the Premier League club.
Ajer is currently contracted to Celtic until the summer of 2022 at least (CelticFC.net). Therefore, any summer bid for him will have to be a colossal one in order for the Parkhead side to sell.
But if the Sun’s report today is to be believed, Rodgers believes that £20m will do the trick. It would also mean that Celtic would be waving goodbye to one of their first-choice centre-backs.
£20m will be difficult to turn down – how strict will Celtic be?
It’s extremely difficult these days to know just how highly Celtic view their top talents. For example, Kieran Tierney was signed by Arsenal for £25m (BBC). However, back when Lenny was first in charge, we were selling our top talent for just over the £10m barrier.
Times have changed, and Celtic won’t be letting their best players go so cheaply. However, considering we bought him for next to nothing from Norwegian side Start – it would represent amazing business from the club off the pitch.
There will be some bitterness from some supporters regarding selling any of our talents to Rodgers. But it’s unlikely that the club beaks feel similar. If a big offer comes in from anyone and for anyone, don’t be surprised to see that player go.
Fans would understand if club accepted
Many fans will also surely be able to understand it more if it was to happen next summer. That gives Celtic plenty of time to scout a replacement in the meantime.
It was actually Rodgers who brought Ajer into the first-team and helped make him the imposing figure that he is. The Norwegian has a lot to thank our former manager for. It’s no surprise that Rodgers would want to take him down to the King Power Stadium.
To get an offer like this from Leicester would be extremely tempting for the club. Tierney broke new ground in the summer with his fee. Therefore, it’ll be interesting to see if the club look for similar for the likes of Ajer and others attracting interest.
Any deal that sees Ajer go would be a sad one. Until an official bid comes in, we’ve nothing to worry about. But if enough money is shown, we all know Celtic will look to get the deal done.
