Report: Celtic tried to secure Sheffield United's George Baldock on loan

Celtic failed in a bid to land George Baldock on loan, with Sheffield United wanting any move to be permanent, according to the Daily Mail.

Baldock has been linked frequently with a move to Parkhead over the current transfer window. Yorkshire Live believed that reports in Scotland had Celtic valuing Baldock at £5m.

The Star, meanwhile, reported that United valued him a lot higher. They also claimed that Baldock was a player personally endorsed by manager Ange Postecoglou.

But there’s been no progress since. Presumably because of United’s meaty valuation of the player and the player’s reported stance of being happy with the Blades [The Star].

However, the Daily Mail believes that Celtic did indeed launch an offer United’s way. A temporary one. The Hoops are said to have looked to try and bring Baldock to Parkhead on loan, with United only interested in a permanent move. The report links Celtic, Olympiakos, and Burnley as interested parties.

Celtic move for George Baldock makes sense – if it’s permanent

Baldock would undoubtedly be a fine signing for Celtic. He would be an instant upgrade on Anthony Ralston, and would come with decent experience to his name too.

He’s a player with 70 EPL appearances to his name. Not to mention 77 Championship outings and 89 in England’s League One. He’s worked his way up the ladder and proved himself to be a forward-thinking full-back at the highest level last year [Transfermarkt].

However, more important than bringing in Baldock is bringing in a permanent solution. In 12 months’ time, Celtic would still find themselves in the same situation regarding needing right-back cover.

At the moment, regardless of Celtic’s interest, it’s difficult to see how we get this one over the line. United want a permanent move if anything, but their valuation is way over what we would hope to pay.

And make no mistake, Celtic are running out of time to get a deal over the line here. The transfer window closes at the end of August. The potential signing of Aurelio Buta also looks in doubt along with the Baldock complications [Scottish Sun].

Celtic need to commit to an option soon. Postecoglou simply can’t be left with the situation as it stands. But any thoughts of a loan move need to be put to bed, we should be trying to build something here.
