Celtic are looking to sort out the situation surrounding John Kennedy before announcing Brendan Rodgers’ return to Glasgow as manager.

Reporter Stephen McGowan, one of the journalists breaking news on this story, has stated in the Scottish Daily Mail [16/06 print edition, page 77] that Celtic are keen to figure out Kennedy’s future at the club before a Rodgers unveiling.

Kennedy has been offered a four-year contract to join Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur, but the Bhoys have held firm on a clause in Postecoglou’s Celtic deal that prevents him from taking Lennoxtown staff with him to London.

The report states that Spurs are now looking at Rodgers’ former assistant Chris Davies to assist Postecoglou. That’s a move that could make Kennedy’s stay in Glasgow more likely, it’s said.

Rodgers has apparently made it clear to the long-serving Celtic man that he is wanted as part of the staff. The pair have a close relationship.

It’s still clear that the Bhoys and Rodgers are close to moving forward in tandem. No reporting has indicated there’s been a breakdown on that side of things, despite a frustrating wait for official word.

It’s a wait that could now stretch into the weekend, with little of Friday left for the club to make a big PR fuss. However, it should be noted that Rodgers was announced as our new manager in the early evening of a Friday back in 2016.

These kinds of deals can be complicated, even if there’s a verbal agreement between Rodgers and a figure such as Dermot Desmond. Agents and representatives get involved, contracts are pored over and small details can hold things up.

Add in the Kennedy situation and it’s easy to understand why we haven’t quite heard yet. Hopefully, fans aren’t left wondering what’s going on for too long.
