Celtic want to sign Victor Wanyama from Tottenham Hotspur on loan before the end of the summer transfer window, according to The Daily Record.

The Kenyan international is reported to have been on the verge of a £13m move to Belgian outfit Club Brugge, but that’s a deal that now looks unlikely, say the paper.

Now Lennon has put the player at the top of his wanted list, with Spurs said to be open to sanctioning a loan if no permanent move for the player looks likely, states the report.

There are hurdles to over come. It’s said that Celtic would only be able to pay half of his current wages and that Spurs still prefer getting rid of him completely rather than on loan.

According to Spotrac, he currently earns £65,000-a-week with the English Premier League outfit.

Do Celtic need him?

Our central midfield area is currently a strong part of the Celtic team but it arguably lacks depth, especially when it comes to more defensive minded midfielders.

Beyond captain Scott Brown, there’s no-one really suitable for a primarily ball winning role in the middle of the park. Eboue Kouassi hasn’t been seen for quite some time.

Wanyama’s game is about much more than that side of the game of course, but he’s clearly a viable option to play an anchoring role that allows Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie to impact the game in the final third.

Having made 91 appearances for the Hoops in the early stages of his career, the 28-year-old has gone on to play in the English Premier League over 150 times.

Last term he made six appearances in the UEFA Champions League on Spurs’ journey to the final, playing in both semi-final legs.

The signing of the Kenyan international, even on loan, would be nothing short of stunning for the Hoops. He has an experience and quality, as well as an understanding of what it takes to play for Celtic, that would greatly enhance our squad.

Clearly there’s a long way to go here to get any deal over the line, but fingers crossed the situation falls our way before the end of the transfer window tonight.
