Celtic wanted to sign Utrecht winger Gyrano Kerk on transfer deadline day, the Daily Record reports.
The report states that the Hoops made a ‘concrete bid’ for the player, according to Utrecht owner Frans van Seumeren.
“Lots of clubs asked about Kerk, but they never turned into actual offers. The only club who made a concrete bid was Celtic” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
Hoops were on the lookout for a winger
The Hoops were on the lookout for a winger in the dying days of the transfer market, and Kerk, who has scored nine goals in 22 appearances this season, seems to fit the bill of what the Hoops were after.
However, the move was not followed up on, and Kerk is still at his current club.
The news of Celtic’s interest in Kerk is intriguing, especially after the Hoops tried and failed to sign a winger on transfer deadline day.
Sky Sports (Live blog 31/01 16:42) reported that Celtic made an offer for Newcastle’s Christian Atsu, but just over an hour later Sky Sports (Live blog 31/01 17:46) reported that the player wanted to stay and fight for his place in the Newcastle side.
Some fans might ask why wasn’t a move made earlier
What some Celtic fans might well be asking is why didn’t the Hoops move for Kerk earlier in the transfer window, if he was a player that the club were eager to sign.
However, the move didn’t happen, and Celtic only made two signings in the January transfer window. Only time will tell if the Hoops made a mistake in not finalising any deal for Kerk.
