Celtic’s move for Danish full-back Peter Ankersen looks like it could be off, according to reports. The Daily Mail report that the Hoops’ move for the 28-year-old Copenhagen man has “hit the buffers”.
Although further details aren’t known, it does seem a bit of a blow for Neil Lennon as he tries to fill the problem position. Celtic currently only have one real right-back at the club in Anthony Ralston.
In recent weeks, Cristian Gamboa, Jeremy Toljan and Mikael Lustig have all departed the scene meaning that finding a new player to fill the position is a bit of a priority for Lennon.
Celtic kick-off their Champions League campaign away to FK Sarajevo in less than a fortnight so time isn’t exactly on their side either.
Ankersen looked like a good candidate
Danish international Ankersen looked like the ideal fit for the position. He’s played for Red Bull Salzburg and Copenhagen in recent years – honing his talents both domestically and in Europe.
He played 34 of Copenhagen’s 36 league matches last season and all 12 of their Europa League clashes. He also picked up his 25th cap for his country in their 5-1 victory over Georgia earlier this month.
It will be interesting to see where Celtic and Lennon turn to now. We’ve been linked with a number of other players this summer, like George Baldock from Sheffield United. There are no obvious candidates in Scotland that could be considered good enough for a starting berth at Celtic. That means that the work will have to go on this summer.
