Frank Lampard’s Chelsea have been sending scouts to watch Odsonne Edouard in action for Celtic, returning to London with glowing reports about the striker, according to website 90min.com.
The outlet cites sources which say that Edouard is now on the club’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window alongside Lyon star Moussa Dembele, a former Celtic teammate and compatriot of the Frenchman.
It’s unknown what matches they have been in attendance for recently but Edouard’s form being what it is, he’s showing elite-level skills on a weekly basis right now.
He’s scored seven goals in his last seven appearances for Neil Lennon’s side (FitbaStats) and even when not directly contributing to our scoring tally is giving opposing defences a torrid time.
Chelsea will likely be looking for the next generation of superstars this summer after a transfer ban and it’ll be interesting to see if they turn their attention to Celtic.
What should Celtic’s stance be this summer?
Celtic obviously can’t control which clubs are and aren’t interested in Edouard but they must be prepared for every eventuality.
This summer is a critical one when it comes to Edouard and Celtic’s future relationship. His contract doesn’t expire until 2022 but that means the next transfer window is ostensibly the one his value is at its peak on the market.
I, like many other fans, am hoping that Celtic manage to negotiate a new contract to keep him settled and well rewarded at the club, giving us a bit of breathing room when it comes to a potential sale.
Just imagine what a boost it would be to our hunt for a potential tenth successive title win if Edouard could be retained for another 12 months.
Here’s hoping Celtic and the Frenchman are on the same wavelength.
As it is, English clubs can admire from afar while we enjoy what he has to offer on our march towards more trophies.
