A report from French daily newspaper Le Parisien has stated that Celtic have been offered former Ligue 1 man Giannelli Imbula.

Imbula has been without a club since leaving Russian club Sochi at the end of last season. The Congolese star has been training on his own since July 2020.

The midfielder has played for the likes of Marseille, Porto, and Stoke City in the past. Back in 2015, he signed for the Portuguese club in a mammoth €20million (£17.7m) [Goal] However, his career has been on a decline since then.

Stoke would sign him less than a year later for £18.3m, but cancelled his contract back in February last year after he only made 28 appearances for the club [BBC].

And Le Parisien believe he’s now been offered to Celtic as he looks to find himself a new club.

Celtic don’t need former Ligue 1 man Imbula; Brown’s replacement is sorted

In truth, this is a deal Celtic don’t need to touch. Especially given Imbula operates in a position in which we’re more than sorted in for now.

As well as Ismaila Soro, who looks nailed on to be Brown’s successor, we have the likes of Luca Connell and Scott Robertson also vying for minutes in the midfield. Bringing in Imbula would seriously limit the Lennoxtown youngsters’ opportunities.

Imbula has recently been on trial with Nantes. However, they decided in the end not to take him on board. That should send alarm bells ringing for Celtic, as this isn’t the player that Porto and Stoke acquired several years ago.

Le Parisien state that he was thought to be the new Claude Makelele, but his attitude has let him down in the past.

An anonymous former manager of Imbula’s spoke to the French outlet and said the following: “He believed that all the others are idiots and that he was alone with such strong intelligence. What a waste.”

This looks like one Celtic could do with avoiding for now. We already have the necessary depth in the defensive midfield position. And given Imbula could come with an attitude problem if he isn’t getting regular minutes? No thanks.
