A report from the Daily Star has claimed that Odsonne Edouard is open to a move to England, but ideally wants a top-six club.
The newspaper claims that West Ham United are going to try and push through a deal for the Frenchman before the end of the transfer window.
The report states that David Moyes has had Edouard watched several times. They believe the Celtic man is “desperate” for a move to England and would fancy a move to London.
However, it’s believed he wants to join an established top-six side. That could be tricky given Eddy has struggled this season.
Celtic are said by the report to be ready to cash in on Edouard now. Tottenham and Arsenal are also interested, but wouldn’t consider a move until the summer. But this would also contradict the Glasgow Times’ view last week. They stated a source close to the player told them that a move was unlikely this month.
And so the Edouard saga kicks off; Celtic star could be a success in England
As we enter the final days of the January transfer window, it’s no surprise to see things kicking off regarding Edouard’s future.
If Celtic are willing to cash in now, it’s one hell of an admission. It would effectively be the club saying straight up that they believe there’s nothing to fight for this season. After all, we were adamant he wasn’t leaving in the summer…what would make us change our mind now?
Edouard would likely be all for it too. What else has he got to play for here that would get his juices going? The Scottish Cup? Nah, he’ll be craving more than what Celtic can give him. Especially considering the mess we’re in this season.
And make no mistake, Edouard has played his part in that. Consistently poor performances have seen him score only four league goals this season. But we know how football works, and big players will still get their big moves.
Finding a move to an established top-six side, however, could be difficult. Not many top club scouts will be watching Edouard and thinking he’s exactly what’s needed for their employers. Certainly not this season.
A move to a West Ham could be a decent stepping stone for him. He has all of the attributes to make a success of it in England. And selling this month would give Celtic a chance to get a lot more out of his transfer fee given there’s still 18 months remaining on his deal.
But expect this to rumble on for quite some time. And certainly until the end of the January window at least.
