Celtic managerial target Eddie Howe has been earning £100,000-a-week from Bournemouth this season, The Sunday Post reports today. [23/05 print edition, back page]
That wage, as well as potential bonuses had Bournemouth earned promotion from the English Championship, have been cited as reasons for the delay in him taking charge of the Hoops.
Journalist Danny Stewart reports in The Sunday Post: “Under the terms of his deal, Celtic’s top managerial target has continued to be paid £100,000-a-week, even though he left the club after their relegation from the Premier League the previous season.”
That seems an extraordinary amount to be paying a manager not actively working for the club, but could explain why Celtic have struggled to complete the appointment.
Following the Cherries’ play-off defeat to Brentford, The Sunday Post reckon Celtic now have the green light to secure the deal that will see him succeed Neil Lennon as our permanent manager.
It’s stated that Howe wants Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone in at the Bhoys as coaching allies, as well as technical director Richard Hughes.
The Scottish Sun have previously reported that he will earn a £2m-a-year salary at Celtic, which works out at around £38,500-a-week.
Fans will be eager to have a new manager in the door as soon as possible, with the scale of the Celtic rebuild massive ahead of summer European qualifiers.
Lots of work needs to be done.
Hopefully we hear something concrete over the next few days.
It’s been a long enough wait already!
