A report from the Daily Mail has finally cleared up the Nicky Butt to Celtic nonsense that had been doing the rounds on Thursday.

For some reason, speculation went wild after Butt left Old Trafford after working for the club as head of first-team development. This led to reports that Butt was being lined up to be Roy Keane’s assistant at Parkhead [Football Insider].

However, the Daily Mail has reported the true reason for Butt’s departure from Utd. Surprise surprise, it has absolutely nothing to do with Keane or the Celtic job.

They state that Butt’s decision came after the promotion of John Murtough as football director. This is an individual he had reportedly had a strained relationship with. It appears that his elevation is what led to him leaving Manchester – not any link to Celtic Park.

Keane is said to be one of a number of candidates Celtic are considering. However, going by the Daily Mail’s report, no favourite has been identified as of yet.

Time to kill the Nicky Butt rumours; Man Utd departure has nothing to do with Celtic

This won’t come as a surprise to many. It seemed far too fanciful at the time that Butt left to join up with Keane. Especially considering there’s such widespread fan anger at the prospect of the Ireland legend joining Celtic.

It looks as though someone has put two and two together and managed to come up with five. The speculation also wasn’t helped by Barry Ferguson telling the Go Radio football show that: “There is a real possibility that it could be Roy Keane.

“If you’re mentioning Roy Keane and Nicky Butt, they are two fantastic midfielders who know the game inside out, the only thing that is going against Roy Keane is he’s not managed since he left Ipswich.”

That, for some reason, seemed to have the rumour mill going into overdrive. But it appears to be based on very little. Man Utd themselves are going through plenty of operational changes after changing their footballing structure. High-profile departures were always going to happen.

That’s what happens when there’s a managerial chase at Celtic however. The rumours go flying and the speculation reaches peak level. But Hoops fans can rest assured there are no certainties over the appointment of Keane, and even less so of Butt.

Goodness knows what the rumour mill will throw at us next in our managerial hunt.

In other news, many Celtic fans couldn’t believe the club’s Friday agreement yesterday.
