Celtic will be one of 12 clubs taking part in an SPFL ‘crisis’ summit on November 28th to discuss the ongoing drama involving the league, Rangers and the matter of cinch’s sponsorship, The Scottish Daily Mail has reported this week. [25/10 print edition, back page]
The Ibrox side have requested the meeting to discuss events leading up to the signing of car company cinch as league sponsors.
In a saga that has now stretched back over a year, Rangers have always claimed they were unable to fulfil the requirements of the cinch contract owing to an agreement they already had in place with Park’s Motor Group – owned by Ibrox chairman Douglas Park.
A solution was eventually found whereby the deal with cinch could continue without a requirement for Rangers to offer inventory but hopes that this would result in an end to all the rancour and arguing were apparently misplaced.
The Scottish Daily Mail reports that Rangers are seeking an apology and a payment of their legal costs, which managing director Stewart Robertson has warned clubs could come close to seven figures, if the SPFL are found to be at fault.
This money would be paid out of the league revenue pool leaving Celtic and the rest out of pocket.
The SPFL have said to be confident there has been no wrongdoing, whilst there’s also anger amongst clubs that Rangers tried to use the issue as leverage in recent votes on the new Sky Sports TV deal.
Rangers, for their part, are also said to be confident of their position and hope that airing all the details at next month’s meeting will go some way to vindicating their stance.
Ultimately, The Scottish Daily Mail reports that if a decision on legal costs goes against the SPFL, it could put pressure on chief executive Neil Doncaster’s position.
There’s more to run on this, eternally it seems, but certainly at least after the 28th November event.
