Dundee United’s Lawrence Shankland price is apparently higher than some may think after a report revealed how much they want for him.
According to Shields Gazzette, an English-based outlet, United apparently want at least £2m for his services. This figure hasn’t been touched upon by manager Robbie Neilson or anyone else at the club.
Shankland has today been given his first ever senior Scotland call-up too. Despite playing in the Championship, his 13-goal haul to start the season has impressed. This also comes on the back of a 34-goal season with Ayr United last term.

Celtic were linked with the forward by the Daily Record a couple of days ago. Tosh McKinlay apparently watched the former Aberdeen man bag a hat-trick against Morton. However, Rangers were also represented too.
Shankland only signed for United in the summer. However, despite that, it hasn’t stopped the big hitters from taking a look at him.
A £2m gamble that isn’t worth taking
Shankland is firing some incredible numbers in down in the Championship. It doesn’t seem to matter who he’s with, he knows where the net is in that division.
However, the step-up to the Premiership, not even Celtic, is a massive one. Look at our rivals across the city. They had the likes of Martyn Waghorn and James Tavernier scoring for fun in that division. Jason Cummings for Hibs was another. Yet, when they came up to the top league, they struggled to hit those same figures.

Celtic are already stacked in the striking department too. Leigh Griffiths, Odsonne Edouard, and Vakoun Issouf Bayo should be more than enough for the time being. If Celtic were to sell Eddy and replace him with Shankland, it would hardly go down well either.
United are quite right to hold out for seven-figures too. After all, Shankland looks like firing them back into the Premiership this season. It’s no surprise that they would value him so highly.

But if he is going to cost that amount of money, it’s cash we could ideally be spending elsewhere. Sure, he might turn out to be a rip-roaring success at a rival club. That’s the risk you take in football.
For Celtic to move for him, however, it would have to be a more tempting sum than that.
