Veteran left-back Emilio Izaguirre has left Celtic, according to a report.

The Herald has reported that the defender has turned down a new deal with the Hoops, and has left on a free transfer.

The return of the defender to Celtic in the first place was a surprise, as he joined up in August after leaving the club the season before.

He featured fairly regularly for the Hoops making 19 appearances for the club this season. However, he has lost his place as back-up left-back to Jonny Hayes.

It was reported by the Daily Record recently that Izaguirre wanted to move to the MLS to continue his career in America.

That could well be the case as the player has reportedly decided to move on from Glasgow.

Talk of new one-year contract is intriguing

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the story is that Celtic offered the player a one-year contract extension in the first place.

That could be an indication that the club are concerned about Kieran Tierney’s injury, and wanted another back-up left-back in the side.

However, the Hoops could now be in the hunt for another left-back, to compete with both Hayes and Tierney.

Izaguirre is a firm favourite of the Hoops’ support, and he will leave the club with the best wishes of the fans.

Who knows, perhaps one day he may return to the club for a third spell.
